Caricature’s Caricature: An Overview

Saturday, April 8th, 2006

This is a personal reflection of what had happened throughout the world after the controversial cartoons of our beloved Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. being published in a daily newspaper in Denmark, Jyllands-Posten. I will try my best to be brief.

The controversy began when the editorial cartoons were published, depicting the Prophet published in September 2005. Riots happened and protests staged in the Muslim world, mainly in protest of what the Danish cartoonists had done, and most embassies pay the price.

The protest started to become harsh and violent after the cartoons were published in fifty other countries, in which led to an open expression of discontent by the whole Muslim societies.

(Okay, actually I’m too tired to write, straight to the point..)

I was invited to attend a dialogue in Abu Dhabi between Muslim delegates comprises academicians, media personnel and graduate students (10 people) and another 20 delegates from Danish youth, students and academics. I hope we can reach a point where toleration is no more a bargain, moreover, it must be a universal, inclusivistic, practical value for all. It is the only way to a peaceful coexistence.

And for them to understand that how Muslim perceives Muhammad is totally different with how the Christians perceive Jesus. Even we see Jesus differently. But one thing that we have to keep in mind is, they are Europeans, moreover, they are Scandinavians. So, (if I can allow some prejudgement here) they dont have the same grasp of Christian faith and practice in their worldly issues. They are totally modern and post-modern people.

Therefore, my presumption is, the issues that will be highly debated or spoken upon are liberalism, human rights and civil liberties, freedom of expression-speech and press-, the concept of prophethood, clash of civilizations or clash of semantics, Muslim and the West, marginalised minorities..etc

So, what the hell am i doing here. I should start reading and contemplating by now. Never take a flight abroad before. True friends, pray for me, and our ummah. We are declining in every aspect. Yes, we hate it, but do we ever do something about it? Think friends!

(As soon as i return home, i’ll write the epilogue of my Caricature’s Caricature. And i’ll make sure it is a good one. What i wrote above is just a piece of rubbish)

Adios senior!
